  BIOGRAPHY

Katherine Shaughnessy is an artist living in Boise, Idaho. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1970. As a teenager, she took drawing classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art and became passionate for nature, art and politics. In 1992, she earned her BFA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

After two years of working at a non-profit arts organization in Washington, DC, she enrolled in The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1997 was awarded an MFA in Fiber Arts. After an art-residency at Central Michigan University, Shaughnessy launched her art career in Chicago with her first solo exhibition. In 2000, Shaughnessy married Tom Michael and together they left the midwest to explore the U.S., living fulltime in a campervan.

Vanlife eventually led them to Marfa, Texas, where they founded a public radio station, launched an online craft business, had two children, and otherwise immersed themselves in the little town that was quickly becoming an international art hub. Shaughnessy published two books on embroidery, became active in politics and education, launching a local Montessori school, and worked at Ballroom Marfa, a contemporary, cultural arts space. Now, a decade and a half later, they have started a new adventure in Idaho where Michael runs the local NPR radio station and Shaughnessy continues to make art. Through her art, Shaughnessy examines the natural world and ponders nature's awkward intersection with human demands and desires.
